Indigenous Health Care

The Australian Government has put an enormous amount of effort into the Indigenous Health Care Programs operated by Medicare, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and Medicare Australia Practice Incentive Program. Integral components of the programs include;

  • Preventative Health Care Assessments should be available free of charge, with a valid Medicare Card, every twelve months or more, to anyone who identifies as being Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both
  • Chronic Disease GP Management Programs, GP Mental Health Care Programs and Team Care Arrangements should be available free of charge, with a valid Medicare Card, to patients with chronic disease
  • Indigenous patients are encouraged to get to know a regular doctor or regular medical practice of their choice
  • Registered medical practices should offer their clients that identify as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both regular Health Care Assessments, and Chronic Disease Management Programs, when appropriate, at no cost to the client, with a valid Medicare Card, every 12 months or more
  • Eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for the Closing the Gap (CTG) Pharmaceutical Scheme (PBS) Copayment measure.

The Closing the Gap (CTG) Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme provides free or low cost medicines to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with chronic disease.

The medical practice tailors individual arrangements to promote the;

  • Early detection of clinically significant medical issues in at-risk individuals
  • Improve longterm outcomes in those living with chronic disease.
